This is actually a very common problem in the commodores and can be caused by either of 2 things
1 the most common problem is the crankshaft angle sensor located down on the front of the engine on the passenger side near the harmonic balancer
the crank angle sensors are very common for this problem and is almost guaranteed to be the culprit
2 is the DFI module can overheat and cause this same problem however less likely than the crank sensor
the way to determine which is causing the problem in your case you should fill a water bottle with water say 2L and carry it inside the car with you
As soon as the car stops jump out with your water bottle and pout the water over the crank angle sensor on the lower passenger side front of the engine it is partly behind the balancer
pour the whole bottle on it and try the engine
if the engine starts straight up then the sensor is your problem..... if it does not start straight up then the DFI module is your problem
