Firstly, I am assuming you have changed the timing belt? Did your mechanic not know how to reset it?
There are a few different ways they do this on Toyotas of that vintage. What engine code is yours? (ie 5L, 1KZ-te etc...)
Also, does it have a tachometer?

Hi Matt
Thanks for your reply. The timing belt has been changed and the mechanic was not sure mhow to reset this particular model so left it. The engine code is 1KD-FTV and yes it does have a tacho. Cheers Grant

Sorry for the delay in my response. I am no longer at work so I can't check the software with the info until Monday, but from memory there should be a "jumper" style connector on the back of the instrument cluster that can be in one of two ways. Remove the jumper and replace it in the alternate position and this should reset the light.
If there is no jumper on the back, then there is possibly a screw on the front of the cluster, that also has two possible locations, and needs to be removed and replaced in the alternate location.
I hope it's one of these two, as I said before there are a number of ways they do it on Toyotas.
