My 1990 audi Quattro has a clinging sound coming from where…

Customer Question
My 1990 audi Quattro...

My 1990 audi Quattro has a clinging sound coming from where the drive chain is.., the timing belt is relatively new and the sound is coming from right where the drive chain should be.

Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the timing belt? Have you ever had to change it before?

Not sure because the odometer broke approximately 6 months ago

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Quattro yourself? What have you tried so far?

I wasn’t going to but all the German car shops don’t have appointments

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Nothing thanks

Do you think the noise is coming from behind the timing cover?

Ask Your Own Audi Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
No.., it’s coming from the cam chain sprocket area... I’m wondering if the cam chain is going.., it’s a 20v Quattro
Audi Mechanic: Pete, Mechanic replied 4 months ago

What year is the car? If the noise is coming from the rear of the head the chain tensioner is bad or one of the chain guides could be broken. How many miles on the car?

Ask Your Own Audi Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
237000.., that’s the thing there is no tensioner based in the Audi repair manual for that year.., just a drive chain turning two cams
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
I just got the car a week ago and I’m not sure if I’m on the right track.., sometimes at idle I don’t hear anything but it’s getting louder and I’m not driving it

Sorry 1990 20v audi Quattro
Audi Mechanic: Pete, Mechanic replied 4 months ago

Ok I remember these engines. The chain dosn't have a tensioner. But they do stretch over time. The distributor gear is prone to wear and that can cause niose. Though the t-belt is new it might have to be retensioned. The only way to be sure is to remove the belt cover and check it . That also goes for the cam chain, take the valve cover off and check the chain and sprockets. The distributor is easy enough to remove so I would do that first.

If I remove the chain from around the cam will I have to do a timing adjustment?
Audi Mechanic: Pete, Mechanic replied 4 months ago

No not really. The cams are marked or you can mark them yourself with paint. The marks are tdc #1 cylinder firing.
