Customer Question
I have been fighting this...
I have been fighting this issue for about a year. And about 8,000 miles.

I have two problems, but I feel like they could be related.

#1
Vibration (nore like a shimmy) in steering wheel at 40mph+ speed ONLY when making a slight left or right turn (lane change). No vibration when steering wheel is held straight, no vibration when making a more full turn.

#2
Noise: I would classify it as a very low hollow "hum". I did make a youtube video of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea_zBCTKnPk but you would have to crank your speakers.
It doesn't do it when the car is first being drivin (cold), but once everything warms up, it will pretty much do it at all speeds. But it is not constant. And some times I feel the "noise" in my gas pedal. It honestly feels like something is rubbing somewhere, but I cannot find where.

My car is somewhat modded. APR turbo back exhaust, KW V1 Coilover Suspension, ECS Snub Mount, OEM RS4 Rear Sway.

Hello ,
Here to answer automotive questions and make you feel comfortable and become familiar with your product

Have you checked the suspension for worn parts , the control arm bushings and ball joints on the upper and lower go bad often .

Check the hold down fasteners are tight for the steering rack one under battery and the other is easily accessible .

This is all that I can think of with out listening to the car myself .

Customer reply replied 8 years ago
Is there a certain torque setting the steering rack fastners should be set to? Or just make sure they are tight?
Audi Mechanic: Roman, Technician replied 8 years ago

Every bolt has a torque spec . I do not happen to know it off hand at the moment.

For now when you go to tighten them you will know right away if they are loose , if it is loose be sure not to over tighten the bolts and break the head off , thats all .
