The Stuyvesant Yacht Club is still open (rebuilding portions, I believe) but did get devastated from Sandy. A friend said that the boats looked like toys.
The trophy is silver plated because by 1904, all manufacturers were required to stamp items with silver content by law. If there was no silver content, no mark was required. Dieges and Clust were known for round medals, ribbons and silver plated items, so that adds to my confidence that it is plated. The 1662 is the shape/pattern for this trophy.
Trophies (sometimes called loving cups) are great decorative items and are keeping a good value for that reason. I have sold dog show, horse show and yachting trophies in both silver plate and sterling for good money in the past 10 years. The name of the boat that won this regatta is MAVIS as you have probably already figured out. This piece is just wonderful. The value of this trophy is $125 to $150.00 retail. You might want to go to their website and contact their historian or manager to offer it to them. That worked for me on one of the Long Island Yacht Clubs and they added it to their display case in the lobby of the Club House.
Your acid test for silver can be tricky. You scrape the item on a testing stone, add a drop to the scraping on the stone , and if it is silver it will turn a creamy ruby red after 10-30 seconds. If it goes tan or brownish red, then it has only a bit of silver plating. It is always good to test a KNOWN piece first, keep that test on the stone, then test the UNKNOWN piece nest to it. The side by side gives a more obvious answer to the purity.
