Whirlpool 21 cf side by side refrigerator stopped cooling.

Whirlpool 21 cf side...

Whirlpool 21 cf side by side refrigerator stopped cooling. Ran for a while, then tripped circuit breaker. Fans all run. Lights all work. Compressore does not run but gets very hot. Also trips GFCI receptacle. I cleaned the coils. There is power to the compressor.

Contractor's Assistant: Can you guesstimate how old your Whirlpool is? And just to clarify, what's the exact model?

All of theThe labels are all missing, but the refrigerator is about 16 years old.

Contractor's Assistant: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?

Yes, I am a general contractor, pretty savvy, and have repaired other appliances.

Contractor's Assistant: Anything else we should know to help you best?

Just wondering if maybe it is the start relay? I don't hear any clicking, but the compressor is VERY hot. When I plug into a regular household receptacle, it does not trip out the breaker, but when plugged into a GFCI receptacle, it trips the breaker like a dead short.

Hi. You will need to ohm out the compressor. If it ohm out good get an overload and relay.

Even if it ohms out ok it could still be a bad compressor. Could have a mechanical problem. But overload and relay cheaper. If it is the compressor it is not worth fixing.

I'm not going to pay for this. Good answer, but vague, and I needed help then and could not wait any longer. I thought I would have an answer in minutes, not hours.
Sorry. I answered the question when I got up this morning and seen it.
