Do you have frost on the rear panel inside the freezer?
Ask Your Own Appliance Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Not yet. Eventually it will. Seem like defrost is not working. Condensation on top of fridge where cold air duct come in though.
If you do get frost then yes you have a defrost issue and we need to test out parts. Do you have a volt meter?

Tip:The defrost heater assembly turns on several times throughout the day to melt away any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater assembly is defective, the defrost system will not work, and frost will continue to accumulate on the evaporator coils. To determine if the defrost heater is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the defrost heater does not have continuity, replace it.Skill LevelPart Testing VideoGE Refrigerator Defrost ThermostatRepairClinic Item # 946924How it
works:Description:The defrost thermostat monitors the temperature of the evaporator coils. When the coils drop below a set temperature, the thermostat contacts close to allow power to flow to the defrost heater during the defrost cycle. In the defrost cycle, the defrost heater melts away any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the defrost thermostat is defective, the thermostat contacts will not close. As a result, the thermostat won’t provide power to the defrost heater. To determine if the defrost thermostat is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. I'm not sure what you sent me. Is that voltage you are referring to (11 - 22 VAC, VDC, Ohms)?
So far:
Door seals good.
Door damper open (no blockage) and resistance value of motors (both windings) good compared to new damper.
All 4 thermistors good resistance compared to temp/resistance chart.
Defrost circuit measures 38.6 Ohms – Blue connector unplugged (J9 on connector) to J7 pin 9.
Evaporator fan is operating but eventually ices up.
Motherboard replaced 5 days ago and symptoms return. Appears evaporator is icing up (defrost problem) and not allowing airflow across it.
Do you have continuity across the defrost heater while disconnected

Have not. Will have to gain access to it by removing ceiling and Styrofoam. Just a switch...opens at 60 and closes at 45. Right?

Ok, will dig in as soon as I empty the freezer. I'll get back to you.

Ok Billy, prior to disassembling, evaporator thermodisk was closed and temp of disk was aprox 2F. Testing the disk: opened at 65F and closed at 43F. Defrost heater resistance 39.7 Ohms, Fill tube heater resistance 1316 Ohms, Evaporator pan heater resistance 313.3 Ohms. So all values ok. No need to replace any of these.
Okay sense all that is testing out the control board should be the failure.

I just replaced it 5 days ago. You didn't read that above? That's why I'm at a loss and that's why I contacted this site. Any other suggestions other than the board?
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Just checked wiring (everything disconnected) from motherboard (J7 pin 9) and the following units: fill tube heater (J9), defrost heater (J9), evaporator thermodisc (J9), evaporator drip pan heater (J12), freezer (J7 pin 4 & 7) & fresh food (J7 pin 6 & J11) door switches. All normal. Door switches also function normal disconnected. Unit is pulled from wall now and access made to top of unit. Cleaned condenser coils.

A common problem is the sensor attached to the evaporator coil. The mother board initiates defrosts , but the sensor terminates it and the sensor can fail and either terminate defrost too quickly or not let it defrost at all. Replace that sensor.

Hi Tom. I've decided since I have everything apart, I changed the evaporator defrost heater, spliced in a new evaporator thermistor and am waiting for the evaporator thermodisc (as you mentioned above) to arrive even though they all tested good. I have nothing to lose but $$. I'll let you know tomorrow night when I plug it pack in. But it usually takes a couple of days before the fresh food side starts warming up due to the restricted airflow across the evaporator.

Yes, let me know

Hi Tom.
Well after replacing the evaporator defrost heater, evaporator thermister and evaporator thermodisc, and waiting one week now, I can say that it is working again. I don't know which part failed but I'm glad its all back together and functioning normal.
Thanks for your suggestion but I was already on that road. Too bad I didn't get you first since Billy couldn't read my troubleshooting steps.
Thanks again.

Pretty sure it was the evap thermistor - your readings on the other parts checked good . Thanks for giving me a good rating.
