JA: Can you guesstimate how old your Whirlpool is? And just to clarify, what's the exact model?
Customer: 2 years. Whirlpool WRX988SIBB00
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?

If the filter is stuck, either the receptacle has failed, or the filter was installed upside down. Definitely keep the water source off but the only thing you can really do is pull harder and force it out. If the receptacle breaks then you need a new filter receptacle but that's ok because its already not releasing the filter.

Can I replace the filter receptacle myself?

No thanks. I'm already feeling like I just wasted $28.

If you're handy you can, yes. The part number is ***** but the ceiling must be taken apart to replace this filter so it's a bit of work.
