The motor is heating up and opening the thermal protector. That is why it needs to cool to reset. How long does it run and does load size matter?

The motor is defective, yes. As for the timer, in Auto Dry cycles, it won't advance until the operating thermostat opens, so it is likely shutting off before that happens.
