I have a kfis25xvms9 fridge and a while back it stopped

Customer Question

I have a kfis25xvms9 fridge and a while back it stopped making ice. Then I noticed that the fridge compartment is not cooling like it should. I checked the coils in the back of the fridge and the are clean. Then after searching the Internet, it checked the evaporator fan which also works, but there was ice build up, so I determined the defrost thermostat was not working. I replaced this but the fridge is still at 44 degrees even though I have it set to 34 degrees. Any help on determining the cause of the problem would be greatly appreciated
JA: What's the make and model of the fridge? And can you guesstimate how old is it?
Customer: Kitchen aid kfis25xvms9, approx 5 years old
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes

Hello and thanks for using this service, if you have been waiting do not worry or get upset. I am Appliance Guru an extremely experienced tech on the site and I try to get to as many customers as I can. I just picked up your question now. NOTE it takes time for me to type research and add links so please wait for me to respond back I can only do this so fast. Secondly I am not paid anything until you rate my service good using the STAR RATING LINK at the top of your page, the money is paid to the site not me directly.

So your evaporator is clear and the fan is running correct and how much of the coil was frosted?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The coil was not completely frosted, but I could not get a reading when I checked the thermostats continuity, so I replaced it. I also check the defrost heater for continuity and that was fine.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
to answer your question, not much was frosted I'd say about 25%

The unit is low on freon, the unit has a leak and it will need to be recharged. This may not be worth repairing due to the cost to actually find and repair the leak, but that is up to you.

All I ask is please use the Star Rating Link at the top of your page before leaving, that is the only way I am paid anything through the site and that will also get you a DIRECT LINK emailed to you to get back to me! are greatly appreciated so thank you very much for using this service. If you have any other questions just post back to me here anytime!

Would the freezer still be operating normally if the freon is low?
Expert:  Appliance Guru replied 1 year ago.

It could if it runs long enough, but generally the temps may only be 10-20 degrees
