I have a GE 18 cu. ft. refrigerator that is running but not

Customer Question

I have a GE 18 cu. ft. refrigerator that is running but not freezing. My wife was complaining that vegetables were freezing in the refrigerator section. I tried adjusting temps in both compartments without success. I then noticed a food box blocking the vent in the freezer when stuff in the freezer was thawing. I discarded the contents of the freezer and put some water jugs in there. They remain liquid. Any hint? Thanks.

Hello I am Joel and will be glad to help you today, you first need to check that all the fans are running the fan in the freezer and the fan at the rear of the refrigerator next to the compressor, if those fans are running then the compressor should be running as well, if the fans are running but not the compressor it is likely that the start relay on the compressor is bad and needs to be changed. If the compressor and both fans are running then the unit has a sealed system problem, it either has developed a leak and does not have freon in the system or the compressor is bad not pumping correctly even though it is running. It has nothing to do with the thermostat or defrost system if the fans and compressor are running and the unit is not cooling at all.
