Hello, this is Dave and I'm happy to help you. The first part of your question is that the pan is used to catch the water that drains down when the freezer coil is electrically defrosted with a heater. This happens on a variable basis from the amount of run time and humidity. The water evaporates from the warm air blowing under the refrigerator. To answer the second question I will need your model number because of the many differences in models.
