Customer Question

Working on a so model 700TFI. stopped making ice. It's as if it dumped a tray and quit. Checked all mechanical, all appeared to be in order. Thinking it is probably switch issue or?. Any input would be appreciated. Thx

Hello, you need to check and make sure the switches are being activated by the basket tray, then check all of these things.

  1. Verify ice maker is turned on.
    • Either the word “Ice” (600, 700), a set of ice cubes falling into a bucket (648PRO) or a set of ice cubes (BI) appears in the control display
    • See also, 532, 542, 561 Models Icemaker On Off Switch
    • Refer to Turn Integrated Icemaker On or Off
    • When the icemaker is first turned on, water may not flow into the mold immediately.
  2. Verify no service messages, icons or error codes are displayed.
  3. Reset the message:
    • 600 and 700 Series with “Service Ice” is flashing: Turn refrigerator off then on to reset
    • Built-In Series with Single cube flashing, see Built In Series Single Cube Flashing.
  4. After unit is turned on, wait at least 24 hours for ice production.
    • Ice makers may not cycle until 24 hours pass.
  5. Confirm freezer temperature is below 5°F.
    • Temperatures above 5°F can affect ice maker performance.
    • Cleaning the condenser can improve temperatures if not done recently.
    • Sub-Zero recommends 0°F freezer temperature.
  6. Verify unit's condenser has been cleaned within the last 3-6 months.
  7. Ensure the ice bucket is properly installed.
    • Ice bucket must make contact with the switches behind it for the ice maker to operate.
  8. Ensure ice maker shut-off arm is in the down position.
    • Turn unit off, and if arm is up, push down gently.
    • Arm will only move an inch or so.
  9. Ensure ice maker white plastic rudder arm is attached to the shut-off arm.
    • Reinstall if needed or replace if broken.
  10. Ensure ice maker fill tube is not obstructed.
    • The fill tube is attached to the ice mold, opposite the support. Water enters the inlet and is directed to the ice mold.
  11. Ensure there are no obstructions or jammed ice cubes in ice maker assembly.
    • After freeing obstructions, turn unit off then on again to reset, ensuring ice maker is on.
    • Use a hairdryer on low to free stuck ice cubes for 5 to 10 minutes.
    • Aim the hairdryer toward the icemaker water fill tube even if it is not visible.
  12. Ensure no recent plumbing or water pressure issues in home.
    • Water must be turned on, shutoff might be located:
      • Under the kitchen sink
      • Under the refrigerator behind the kick plate
      • In an adjacent cabinet
      • In the basement, near the water filter system
    • Low or no water pressure may cause the fill tube inside of the freezer to freeze.
      • Manually defrost the freezer for 4-6 hours by turning it off (see BI Manual Compartment Disable or 600 Series Manual Compartment Disable) OR
      • Turn power to the unit off and use a hairdryer on low.
        • Aim the warm air at the water fill tube for 5-10 minutes keeping the air moving to prevent damage (500, 600)
      • If ice production stops often using reverse osmosis system or well water system, consider adding a pressure booster or regulator
        • Contact the reverse osmosis provider or speak with a plumber for suggestions
  13. Change water filters as often as recommended, typically every 6 – 12 months (BI, PRO48)
    • See Built-In Water Filter Replacement Indicator or 648PRO Water Filter for more information.
    • Some Use and Care guides incorrectly state the water filter replacement icon will flash.
  14. Reseat the water filter by removing and reinstalling.
    • Press and hold water filter reset button for 5 seconds to reset it.
  15. If installed, ensure in-line water filter is not expired.
  16. Let 24 hours pass and check for ice production.
