We have a 10 or so year old GE Monogram Refrigerator that isn't cooling properly anymore. Are there common problems/issues that would cause this? And, if it usually as simple as the regrigerator needing freon or something?

Thanks for counting on us to help with your appliance problem. My name is XXXXX XXXXX I look forward to helping you! Can you hear the compressor running? May I please have your model number so I am able to provide you with accurate, model specific information?

it's looks like the current (2013) version of this refrigerator is ZISS480DXSS

The model number is XXXXX the top, behind the top access panel that will hinge up. What exactly is your refrigerator doing?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

ok..thanks for telling me where to find the model #. The refrigerator is not cooling enough. It's been like a slow decline in how cold the refrigerator and freezer cool. Right now, we really don't even use the refrigerator for anything...we started putting our normal fridge stuff in the freezer side. But that's starting to lose it's cool the point that we can't get it to get down below like 45 or so degrees.

The other thing that is noticeable and has been for some time...when you open the refrigerator and freezer doors, you can feel some really hot areas on the face of the doors and the vertical "spine" that separates the freezer from the fridge.

We've also noticed when calling around to appliance repair services, that most of them don't want to touch this type of refrigerator.

Any thoughts?

That is great information! The hot mullion means the compressor is not getting cooled properly. Raise the top cover and see if the fan up there is running and if the coil is clean. These machines are hard to work on, that is why most won't service them. Let me know what you see up there and if you can, post that model number. It is critical so I can get you accurate information.

Right...unfortunately, i'm at work so i wouldn't be able to provide you with the model #. When you say raise the "top cover" are you meaning the cabinet looking faces that are above the fridge doors on the exterior face of the built in? And if it is a the compressor is that usually all that the issue is...and that replacing the compressor would fix the fridge? I know that's an open question and i'm asking you to generalize...but it would help to know. How much do compressors usually run on these types of fridges?

And do you have a recommendation on where to buy parts for GE Monogram parts?

Sorry for the confusion. The hot mullion strip means that the fan up by the compressor is not running, making the compressor shut down too soon. I believe that fan will need to be replaced, or possibly even just cleaned and lubricated. Also, the condenser coil is likely plugged, which could cause the same symptoms. I don't think this will be a major issue at all, likely only cleaning. The top panel is the decorative one at the very top of the refrigerator. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean that entire area and then a shot of WD40 on the fan motor and see what happens. Reply back if you still have trouble with it. There is not an additional charge for follow up help, so keep me posted!
