Both problems are related. If the washer doesn't drain then the washer wont spin. Most likely this will be a n easy fix. There is a filter for the drain pump. Most likely that filter is clogged. Here is a video that will show you how to clean it. Watch out when unscrewing the cap because water will drain out. CLICK HERE

That box is the pump it self. If it is clicking then is either bad and will need to be replaced or you will need to unscrew the box from the filter housing and see if something is stuck in it. The washer wont spin if it doesn't drain all the water out.

Is there a check I can do on the pump while it is out

You can plug it in and turn the washer to drain. Then start the washer and see if the pump turns.
