okay. on these refrigerators they have a defrost heater that gets real hot when these defrost. what you smell is the seal trim on the back panel inside the freezer heating up and semi melting. they dont catch fire so dont worry. but they get hot enough to make a plastic chemical smell in the freezer. usually you can see for sure by removing the panel inside the freezer in the back behind the food. you will see the side trim seal rubber/plastic peices. the will most likely look deformed like they melted. I usually cut the part off thats melted. it will be at the bottom part and is usually onl a couple of inches. thats really all you need to do. hope this helps, thanks , Bryan
