You will need a model number (which is inside the refrigerator near the ceiling) to see if the thermostat is even still available. You say it's old so it's not likely that they still make the part because thermostats usually are not made after 15 years or so of a refrigerators life. Either way, if the refrigerator is out in the garage, you might want to make sure it's not just too cold in the garage. Refrigerators are normally meant to cool, but if the garage is below 40 degrees, it will start to freeze everything inside the refrigerator. This is because the refrigerator will run, but instead of keeping the heat out of the refrigerator, the door seals are trying to keep the cold air out since the garage is so cold. If this is the case, there is nothing you can do but to warm up the garage or wait until the garage gets warmer before the refrigerator works normally.
