GE Profile trash compactor rapidly cycling between up and down

Resolved Question:

GE Profile trash compactor rapidly cycling between up and down and then shuts down with faint electric burnt smell. Initially presented with rapid popping noise like perhaps the plastic drive nut had stripped out when reaching the fully down position. Is this likely a motor problem or am I missing something?

Does it do this when the ram is up at the top ?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

The ram is in the fully up position, and when I depress the inside switch and turn on, it rapidly alternates the direction of the screws on both sides.

As a follow up. I replaced the directional limit switch per your suggestion with no improvement. Local repair person said that would not have explained why the initial popping occurs in the down position as I stated in my original inquiry. I went ahead and replaced power nuts hoping that was the problem (striping under pressure), but unfortunately still makes noise once ram reaches fully down position. Assume there must be something striped between motor and chain mechanism, but didn't see during my reassembly.
