Resolved Question:

Model # XXXXX washer. On the Regular cycle, the tub fills, the timer/cycler/controller makes clicking sounds, but the machine does not agitate or proceed at all - just fills, clicks, and sits. On Permanent Press cycle, the tub fills, and may proceed as normal through all wash phases, or may balk like the Regular cycle. Or it may fail to rinse normally in some way, leaving the clothes as if they had not spun enough. On Gentle cycle, the thing seems to operate completely normally.

Thanks Jim. I'm accepting. We'll get this ordered at the site you suggested. We're fairly handy and can change electric outlets and switches, swap computer media and storage drives, basic stuff like that. Is this a repair we can tackle? Any advice - like don't cut the red wire before the blue wire - that sorta thing? Any web site that walks through this that you know of?
