Getting a dark residue or oil type substance under the agitator.

This answer was rated:

Getting a dark residue or oil type substance under the agitator. I removed the agitator and cleaner a lot of dirt and sludge from inside the agitator and on top of the trunnion. It seemed OK for awhile, but now it has returned . What could this be?
Do you use the Fabric softener dispenser on the agitator?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
no we do not
OK, than this is transmission oil. Sometimes the seals on them fail and water goes down the shaft forcing up oil. The transmission would need to be replaced.
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
What part of shaft is the oil coming out of ?
The shaft that the agitator goes over is the transmission shaft
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

Yes I realize that but is the shaft hollow and is the oil coming out top ?

Yes, the shaft is hollow. There is a seal in that shaft, if water seeps through that it can force oil up through the top. In the below link, you can see an exploded view of the transmission. The seal is under the bear part.
