About 3 weeks ago the freezer drawer in our Kenmore 596 fridge

Resolved Question:

About 3 weeks ago the freezer drawer in our Kenmore 596 fridge frosted up, especially at the back. This hasn't happened before (purchased in 2001 I think). Last night the motor got really loud. Moved some of the freezer contents out and turned down temperature in freezer drawer to 3 (fridge is still at 4, but milk has been souring early for the last couple of weeks). Motor still very loud. Anything we can do? Thank you.

Okay Most likely cause for your issue is the defrost thermostat, very common problem on these, what's going on is when this goes into a defrost cycle the thermostat turns the heater on to melt the Frost on the coils behind the panel inside the freezer and the very back, the heater is not coming on which means when it goes through it's defrost cycle it doesn't really defrost so eventually the Frost builds up to the point where it chokes off the air supply to the refrigerator section in this can also build up around your fan sometimes the fan will be hitting Frost is starting this is most likely the noise you hear, the first thing you will need to do is is to remove all your food in the freezer and remove the back panel, take a hairdryer in defrost all the Frost on the coils, you need to replace this, it is the defrost thermostat in it is by far the most common issue on this refrigerator, since you live in Canada will need to order it up there from an appliance warehouse, the part number is XXXXX and this is clipped to the top of the evaporator coils, once you get it defrosted you will see it the evaporator coils are the silver coils behind that panel inside the freezer, hope this helps, thanks, Bryan
