My GE Profile refrigerator is not keeping the temp settings.

Customer Question
My GE Profile refrigerator is...

My GE Profile refrigerator is not keeping the temp settings. The freezer is now set at 38 degrees. I change it to 0, hold the button for 3 seconds to set. It says 0, then immediately goes back to 38. Not sure what I am doing wrong or if something needs fixing? Model PTS22SCSARSS

The button on the far left that says to hold for 3 seconds is to lock and unlock the control. You do not have to hold anything to set the temperature. The default display is the actual temperature, and then when you press the "Colder" or "Warmer" buttons, the display shows the temperature you are setting it to - the light next to the word "Set" also lights up while you are doing this to let you know the difference.
So, is the display saying that the actual temperature in the freezer is 38 degrees? Are things in the freezer staying frozen?

It says 38 degrees for freezer and 41 for fridge. I have used the set buttons correctly and after I change to 0 and 37 (recommended settings). It will stay there for a few seconds then go back to 38 and 41. All of the items in the freezer are thawed.

OK, then the problem is not the control. There is another failure if your freezer is not freezing. I will need to know what is running, and what is not running. Is the fan inside of the freezer running? Is the compressor, and the fan next to the compressor (lower back part of the unit) running?

Refrigerator temperature settings explained

The correct refrigerator temperature settings are required to keep frozen foods preserved, and to prevent bacteria from growing in refrigerated goods.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the correct refrigerator temperature settings for food storage for the refrigerator are at or below 40° F (4° C), and 0° F (-18° C) for the freezer. The FDA recommends that you check temperatures periodically with an appliance thermometer, which is the best way to confirm these temperatures and are fairly inexpensive.

If your freezer won’t hold a temperature, it’s possible you have a problem with the main freezer thermistor, the damper or the control board.

If your refrigerator temperature display is correct but the freezer and/or refrigerator temperatures are actually too warm, that’s a different problem. Try these steps:

  • Make sure you have your drawers in the correct spots. Otherwise, if a drawer that’s not vented is accidentally inserted into the wrong spot, freezer air can’t circulate in the drawer, and pushes its way into the refrigerator instead.

  • Check to see if you have a cold control failure. After unplugging the refrigerator, find the cold control, which is a knob or slider with a range starting at OFF inside the unit. Check this to make sure the capillary tube and/or sensing bulb are not damaged or out of position. You should also check the continuity of the cold control with a multimeter.

  • Check to see if you have a problem with your evaporator fan motor. Unplug the fridge and take off the cover from the evaporator fan, located on the back of the back panel of your freezer compartment. If it’s clogged with frost or ice, you have a defroster problem. If the fan blades are loose or damaged, you may have to replace them.

  • Check to make sure the evaporator fan motor shaft moves freely, because if it doesn’t, you may need to replace it. Be sure to check for continuity with a multimeter.

If you're still having trouble with your refrigerator temperature settings, it's time to consult a professional for help.
