Our Maytag top loader washer...

Our Maytag top loader washer (part of a stacked electric washer/dryer combo, about 15 years old) seems to have a problem - when a wash cycle is initiated the drum starts spinning and then makes increasingly loud noises and stops. Opening the lid and adjusting the drum's position (pushing it to one side) helps - after a few tries the washer operates almost normally, just a bit too noisy. Also, there's some water leaking onto the floor during the wash.

The dryers seems to work fine, except there's a high-pitched whirring noise when operating, perhaps a failing bearing?

I'd prefer to get both the units fixed rather than having to buy a new combo, but not sure whether the problems they have are less expensive to fix then buying a new combo. But then again, they say that older combo units were built to a higher quality standards and even a brand new recent model combo may not last 10-20 years like some of the old ones.

Any advice and guidance would be highly appreciated!
