Question Summary
My dryer (installed 10/02) model DWXR483EBOWW s/n SD749560A -- has recently begun to smell when drying loads of clothes??We have pulled it out from the wall, checked the vent pipe/tube - nothing is lodged in there, have checked the lint filters, etc.and looked underneath finding nothing either - also looked at outside vent -- the smell is like "fish" -- it first began with towels and now seems to be doing it no matter what I am drying???Any ideas?????Answer Summary

Most of the time odors are coming from the washer, however most of the time you may not actually notice the odor until the clothes get into the dryer and get hot.

Have you ever ran the washer through a clean cycle(the manufacturer recommends doing it once a month)?

not recently but have washed stuff with bleach to try to dispell the odor in the dryer

actually the washer is a top load and the dryer is a front load --- my bad

Oh ok, you can still get the odor in the top load washers too, its just a lot more common in the front loaders. Unless there is moisture inside the dryer(such as from a clogged vent or excessive lint builup that is holding on to moisture) the odor is normally from the washer. I would recommend running some washing machine cleaner(easy to find because of the problems with the newer h.e. machines) through the washer, after the buildup is out of the washer you should notice the odor start to fade

You have to run 2 clean cycle in a row to remove all the buildup,a product called washer magic isthe bes ti've seen, but clorox, tide, and number of other manufacturers are making specialized cleaners fo washers now

will give it a try - where do I find the washing machine cleaner??? The machine I have is a Maytag and is old -- probably 8-10 years I think book is downstairs I usually just run it empty with hot water and bleach to clean -- is that acceptable or do I need to find the cleaner instead??

The bleach will kill any mold, but doesnt remove the soap scum and buildup they accumulate inside. The cleaners will remove it all. You can find cleaners now in most stores in the detergent aisle. Same thing as with bleach, run empty with just the cleanerand hotwater
