Did you test the thermostat first with an ohms meter? please give me a brief reminder of what the original problem was.

tested it it was open but that was after i removed it from the unit. Origional problem was over temp or over time in the defrost cycle. the ice in the maker would melt and form an three inch thick icecile down the back of the freezer. The unit would then restart and make new ice. It appeared the freezer would go over 0 degrees but not read more than 10 or 12 on the display. the cycle repeats every five days or so.

Yes the melted water drips slowly to form a large icecicle a foot long and three inches thick. So it appears that the melt is long and slow. the freezer does restart and good new is is formed. the process repeats every 5 or 6 days. Since there is no mechanical timer for the defrost cycle I'm assuming the motherboard must be the cause. there is a way to jumper the defrost conector and start a cycle - all that will tell me is the heater is working?

Yes starting the defrost cycle will just tell you the heater is working. Yes does sound like this problem is either with the temp sensor located above the evaporator

Or the motherboard. There is a tech sheet located under the unit this will tell you the ohms reading of the temp sensor. Check this first if it is out of range then it's the problem. If it is good the mother board will be bad.

Another thing to check is make sure the ice maker is not overflowing on fill up. Make sure you have a full ice tray and then shut the ice maker system off. If you still have a problem then it's going to be the sensor or motherboard. If the problem stops the ice maker if faulty.

There is no tech sheet anywhere in under or behind the unit. Went on vacation for a month, shut down water and stitched off the ice maker. Remaining ice melted to a large icicle as before. Thermostat that I replaced was disc shaped just like the one removed. There are two possible temp sensors like the one in your pix. Ohm reading from line to def with connector off at the MB reads in the 500k range. Line to comp and comp to def are open. Have I wasted $56 + the cost of the thermostat? Replace MB for $175?

Did you check to make sure the water was not dripping into the tray where the ice is made and overflowing?

I had sent an earlier mail that I turned off the ice maker with the switch in side the freezer, and also shut off the water to the frig. When returning from a 4 week vacation all the remaining ice in the bin had again melted into the icicle.

If I leave the 3 pin connector off the motherboard that goes to the def. and the issue goes away could it still be the either the MB or the sensor.

Do you know the correct reading for the sensors since there is nothing in around or underneath the motherboard or the unit to give me a clue. Am I reading the correct pins for the sensor? It's a three pin flat plug on the left side of the MB.

tonight at a social meeting there were two other couples that have the same issue with their GE Artica unit! All in the last 3 years of a new refrig!

WTF ??? is this a on going problem! My other neighbor has had the MB replaced twice for the same problem. this I just found out this evining. GE needs to pony up to their problem!!!!!

Interesting that last night at a party there were two other people in the gated community where I live that have the EXACT same problem with their 4 year old GE. One has had the mother board replaced two months ago and appears to be fixed. The other couple is still fighting the GE repairman over multiple visits without a fix!

Me thinking Jabba the GE Hud is not admitting to a big quality problem. By the way both of them also has the large block of ice in the passage between the freezer and the frig near the crisper that I have always had. The GE guy says there is no fix for that. Just chop it out every few weeks!
