Resolved Question:

I ran dishwasher last night and this morn. it was still hotter than usual and the dishes weren't entirely clean. I've just tried to run again and the reg. wash button lights up but the on/off button does not. It now doesn't start.

do you have a model number and brand so that I can better assist you?

Bosch. The model with the controls on the inside of top panel.

ok so do you hear a humming or motor running at all when you try to start a cycle or is it completely silent?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
it is running

ok so this means that the unit is stuck in flood mode. Somehow water got underneath your tub into the overflow pan below. You'd need to uninstall your dishwasher and remove the left side panel in order to access the drain pan. Drain all the water out by soaking it up with a towell and then reconnect everything and try again. If it acts up again, you'll need to leave it out and remove the right and left side panel and try to look for a leak, causing the unit to go into flood mode.
