unfortunately the control pad is probably malfunctioning (they wear out because of the thin carbon style ribbon connectors they have.) and will need replaced. You can try to remove the cover and locate the touchpad overlays that are plugged in with a ribbon style (flat plastic) connector. Push it in and out of the connector several times to try to clean the contacts. if this does not work you will need to replace the touchpad overlays if available or the whole control panel. Contact the manufacturer for parts.

about the only thing I need now is; are you familiar with how to get that control pad cover off. I tried last night and it didn't want to just pop off and I daidn't want to damage it before talking to someone.

they usually lift up and off after removing a few screws out of the back
