we have a 12 year old front load washer. today it started to make some terrible noises. we emptied the machine and spun the inside drum by hand and there is a real grinding noise or sounds like there is something loose between drums. with labour costs what they are, in your opinion should we have it looked at or buy a new one? thanks Hans

It is best to buy a new one. You either have a broken spindle or a bad rear drum bearing. The repair will cost over $800.00

if the spindle was broke the drum would not turn freely, which it does just noisey. this sounds like something loose not a bearing

Can you wiggle the tub up and down. The spindle has 3 arms on it. On will break and it will just mak noise. Even if something is just stuck between the tubs it will cost over $400 dollars in labor
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
yes we can move tub up or down , spin it a bit and move up or down. it only makes that terrible noise when we spin the drum
Expert:  Appliance Man replied 7 years ago.
The tub shouldn't move up or down. You have a broken spindle.

the tub on this machine has always moved up and down, it is supposed to but I do agree that something is in between the drums and at 400 is not worth fixing. thanks for your help.
