Hi: I have a Tappan gas range four burner model # XXXXX purchased in 1999. I have a problem when using the burners, the oven will turn on by it's self after turning off the top burners without any knob turning. The only way to turn the oven off is to turn the knob to broiler setting and then back off. This started happening in September and seems to be more frequent now. It does not matter how many burners are on either. Could it be a defective valve behind the over knob? The gas company has know clue and states that the gas regulator valve and oven knob are fine. Any suggestions? A replacement oven knob valve is $100.00. Is it worth replacing?

when the oven turns on, do you mean that the oven starts heating up or that gas just starts pouring out into the oven when you turn the burner off?

The oven igniter goes on and then the gas burner lights up. The only way to shut it off is to turn the oven knob to broil and then back off. The igniter then goes out and no gas in coming in. At no time is the oven knob in the ON position, only the burners are on the stove top and it doesn't matter if one or all four. There is no gas leak or smell when the top burners are off. During cooking the Thanksgiving dinner on the top burners, the oven decided to turn itself on without touching the oven knob. If the stove has not been in use for a period of time, the oven does not come on, only during or after use of the top burners. The oven seems to have a mind of it's own. Any suggestions?

the only thing that can cause this is your control board. There's is no logic for what is happening which is why the board has to be at fault. Here is a link to the part you will want to order and replace.
