yes, it fills back up but then does not start agitating

Ok you have a bad lid switch. If the lid switch is bad it stops the motor from turning. It is a safty feature.

its an old washer anyway -any quick way to at least get the water out - or is a new lid switch an easy fix?

The lid switch is a easy fix. it sits up in the top console.

You have to order the part and replce it. The top back panel will come off.
