Is it normal water heater tanks to make noise?

Resolved Question:

Replaced leaking  John  Wood  40  imp  gal  with new  John  wood 40  imp  gal hot water tank recently. Now customer says when burner comes on to heat water, it is too noisy. Is this normal for new tanks. Have installed hundreds of tanks, this the first I've had this complaint.

It has been my experience that this happens when there is a restriction in the gas line. i.e. Flex connector too narrow, inlet screen partially clogged, build-up of pipe dope/tape in one or more connections, etc. You'll have to do some investigating for a restriction.
