it did stop before the last drain the first time, but when I just tried it, it drained just fine.
I did tip it up and and it seems like the drain pump belt had slipped off a bit. I pushed it back on and tested the machine. It filled fine, but it had that same grinding/whirring sound while agitating. Could that sound be from the belt if it is stretched and needs replacement or is that sound from something more sinister like the motor or transmission? Bad burnt smell did increase again while testing.
I just don't want to waste money to get someone out here if I need a 250$ part. Will just invest the service call money on a new machine.

well that noise isn't going to be a belt for sure.
The best way to figure out what part is causing the problem is to tip the machine backwards and just turn the pulleys by hand.
If the noise comes from the left pulley then that is the motor. The right pulley is to the drain pump. The center pulley is to the transmission. If it's anything other than the right pulley then just replace the appliance because the repair is going to be a lot especially for a 10+ year old appliance.
