I have a 708 smartdrive 7.5kg when I switch on, the lights come up but machine won't start.

Hi Ya,

you can try removing the plug for 30 minutes and this will reset the system. And clear any electronic glitches.

If this fails to remedy the problem there is most likely a bad control board.

I have tried switching off , taking plug out, disconeccting hosses and sometimes it would work and other times not. back to you.

From this I see that the control board is bad.
Depending on where you are they may call this part the mother board like in the UK.
The only other thing that would have it light up but not start would be a stuck key on the keyboard. This is not repair able. It would need the keypad to be replaced.

Yes they call it the mother board and it is quite expensive, is there any other reason the machine won't fill besides the moter board being bad?

Au Ha,
You initially said, when I switch on, the lights come up but machine won't start.

If the water will not fill then it is not any of these expensive parts.
What is the complete model number?
Every washer has screens in either end of the water supply hoses and they may be clogged with debris.
Turn off the water hot and cold and remove the supply hoses from both ends and check the screens and clean them. They may pull out on some to clean them and then re attach them. After this you would need to have the water control valve checked.
you need an ohm meter or a hands on tech on location. It is most likley that the screens have debris in them or the water control valve is bad. Had this 3 times with my washer over the years.

It's a GW708U and i have cleaned filters on the hoses but have not had the water control valve checked.

Slow filling or know filling is usually caused by a worn out inlet valve. Find out who your local F&P parts supplier is by checking the phone book, phoning F&P customer help line or asking your local appliance store.
This service manual for the smart drive may help you.
gaurd it because they are hard to come by.

i had to get an appliance technician in, and within a minute he worked out it was the lid so he by-passed it, all in all it took 2 minutes and cost $89, not a bad sort of hourly rate. Thanks for your help
