Hi, we have a TPG24PF refrigerator. Its about 10 years old.

Resolved Question:

Hi, we have a TPG24PF refrigerator. It's about 10 years old. About 2 hours ago, it gave off a very bad smell - as though some gas has leaked. The motor also cuts in and out. We've opened all windows. Not sure what to do. Any advice?

Hi b,

Thank you for using Just Answer.

It may be that the unit has lost the coolant from it's sealed system. You should air out the house completely.

This type of repair is not usually done on a refrigerator unless it is covered by the original manufacturer's warranty.

You should check the owner's manual to see if your refrigerator's sealed system and compressor are still covered. They used to warranty them for 5 years. You will need a copy of the sales receipt to receive warranty work. If you are covered and have the receipt call 1-800-GE CARES to set up a service call.

If you are not covered by GE's warranty, then the bad news is that you will need to shop for a new refrigerator. Paying for this repair is not cost effective. A new refrigerator will save you electricity and the money that you save will pay for itself in a few years.
