How to remove the agitator from a Maytag Washer, Model #PAV2300, to remove garment caught under agitator?

Just pry off the cap on the top of the agitator. There is a bolt underneath the cap. Remove the bolt. Take a belt and loop it under the agitator and pull up. Sometimes the agitators can be tough to pull off. Usually a belt and a good grip will work.

This agitator has a fabric softener device on top. I've removed the lid to the fabric softener unit, but the body of the softener unit (a sleeve about 8"tall, with a spiral exterior 5" in diameter) is still attached, and moves independently of the agitator. It has a hollow shaft, about 1-1/2" in diameter. I can see a screw in the floor of the shaft; but am hesitant to remove it because it might be tricky to reinstall.

Must this fabric softener unit be completely removed in order to access the bolt which secures the agitator?

You are in the right place. You should be looking straight down when you see the screw. Once the fab softener disp is out, then you will see the bolt.

It just takes a little patience. You will be ok taking it out and reinstalling it.

Good Luck. If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks Again for using!
