Resolved Question:

Last night I smelled burning from the back of the refrigerator. Bad pungent odor. This morning the freezer had defrosted but I could hear the fan running. There was no more burning smell. What do you think has burned out? We purchased this Maytag refrigerator new on 10/10/06.

Hi, Thank you for using justanswer for your appliance questions!

The smell you smelled last night is most likely the relay assm. This part is what starts your compressor motor. The part is located on the left side of the round black compressor motor behind the rear lower panel. Usually the relay wont fail on that new of a unit by itself. The compressor probably failed.
Hope this helps!
