My GE refrigerator is 11 years old, mdl TBX21DA. The freezer is top mounted. It has developed a loud noise, like a thunk, apparently when it stops running. I have not been experiencing any problem with cooling temperature or icemaking.
Hi, Thank you for using justanswer for your appliance questions!
That thump, thump, thump rattle is most likely your compressor motor. A refrigerator compressor is actually a motor within a shell. The inside part is mounted on 3 springs. When the spring breaks or gets weak the inside part is closer to the shell casing, therefore it hits the case when it shuts off. Due to your fridges age, the repair exceeds the cost of replacement.
Hope this helps!
