Hi Mica! Doris here. I had a few errands to run this AM. I really appreciate your patience. I am working on this now.

Ask Your Own Antiques Question

The one with the cap was a pencil holder for the old large rectangular wood pencils. The pencil would fit tightly into its holder similar to a pen nip tip. If it were longer, it would have held a thermometer on a nurses belt.

The other piece with the hole was most likely for matches - as an open vesta . With the rings, both of these were originally attached to a chatelaine ..a chain with small useful items attached that the manager of a household would wear around his/her waist.

The dating would be late 19thC - early 20thC.

The estimated retail values..

Open piece - $170

Pencil holder - $225

I hope this helps you, once again.

Positive, please.

Kind regards,

Doris

Thank you so much. That would have to be a small pencil. It's not large enough for one of those old rectangular pencils. Such interesting facts you bring to me. Thank you once again.

The pencils back then were a different size than most we are familiar with but I am positive that is what this piece is. I used to sell a few in my store. Most were English.

Once again, thank you so much for the positive. I enjoy working with you.

My best,

;D

The figure I see is not a Toby Jug figure. The man is were an early English scholar's hat.

"Were" should be "Wearing."

I zoomed in on the first photo you sent. I now see what you mean. There is definitely a handle on the figure. It is a Toby mug figure of a scholar.
