This is a circa 1800-1830 English Georgian/Regency period black lacquer papier mache pen box (or hair memorial box) with a gilt painted image of a woman watering flowers,
attributed to Clay of London or Jennens & Bettridge of Birmingham. Their pieces were not always marked. This piece (damage noted) has a value of $800-$950 in a shop or
$250 at an auction.

Thank you very muchUnderstand this is box for pens (or hair), but could you tell me what is meant by penwork, as in a penwork box?

Penwork is a term mostly used by the English on Chinoiserie gold over black designs but you could use that term for this box. I looked again at the photos and I think this is wood rather than papier-mache when looking at the chips on the other side.

This is a circa 1800-1830 English Georgian/Regency period penwork black lacquer hinged box with a gilt painted image of a woman watering flowers. The box would be made of sycamore or another light wood with black lacquer with gold leaf penwork image of a woman in her garden.
