I havejust received a sterling silver teapot and cream and sugar set from my mother who inherited it from her father who came from Scotland. The markings on the bottom are JR in a oval circle, an & sign in a circle, an S in a circle, and it looks to be a crown or crest. It has a Cross above these markings in a circle. All pieces have the numbers 12538 and the teapot has the number 99 at the top of the bottom and a 4 at the bottom of the bottom and the sugar and creamer have the number 45. Can you tell me anything about these pieces? Laurie

There was a tray but I don't believe it is a match to the items from Scotland. It has the name Wallace and 601 with the number 16 under it. I think she just displayed the teapot on it. But I know the tray is old too.

I apologize for the delay. I am a popular expert today and there were a few ahead of of you.This is a silver plated tea set made by John Round and Son of Sheffield, England (not Scotland) circa 1863-1886 when this mark was used and before they became John Round and Sons, Ltd. This tea set in pattern 12538 comprised of teapot, sugar and creamer (there is also a coffee pot that was part of the set) has a value of $100.00. The tray is also silver plated and was made by Wallace (American) in the Castledon pattern. This tray has a value of $35.00.It is important for you to click the stars after you have read this answer.
