Cushman is considered a fine American (Vermont) furniture maker whose "creations" were very well made and of high quality. Their mid-20th century pieces (such as those you describe) would be considered "collectible" and at retail garner a little more than the average for similar pieces of the period by lots of other makers. So, in excellent condition a vanity set would be in the range of about $900-$1,100 and an accompanying dresser of average size, roughly $800-$900. You can really see the quality in basically all aspects of these types of pieces. So, they could very well hold their value going forward for some time to come.

Hello, there.
There certainly is a chance that what you smell could emanate from the wood itself (esp. if there is cedar involved). Unfortunately, without being able to smell the odor, I cannot say what it is. If it is the wood itself, there really won't be too much you can do to mitigate the odor because it is within the material's molecular natural make up. If it is something else, you can try removing everything from the drawers and wiping their insides with a cloth that you have dampened with a solution of water and a bit of baking soda (dissolved in the water) and a couple of table spoons of white vinegar. After any dampness from doing this has dried, sprinkle a good amount of baking soda all around the insides of the drawers and leave it there for a day or so and then remove. This should help at least a bit. In any event, they sound like nice pieces, so I hope you'll have some success with "freshening them up."
