Try the phone in a place where there *were* signal bars registering, where you did get to make a call previously - are there no signal bars in that location now?

- if 'no' then you have a defective phone, or its service is unreliable (rather more doubtfully... to be considered if a replacement phone from the same provider has the same sort of problem in your regions of usage.)

- if 'yes', then the regions you try to make calls in may not all 'have signal'... if you tell me the geographic location and the name of your phone's carrier e.g. Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc., then I can consult coverage maps and tell you for sure, whether you are in a marginal area for that carrier.
