I am unable to activate my new Samsung Gusto phone with Verizon because after i enter my 5-digit zip code the voice says it must be 5 digits.

Hello Frank.

The reason why the voice says that you must enter 5 digits is because you are pressing Send before entering the zip code. So, all you need to do is enter the 5-digit zip code THEN press Send. That will get your phone activated.
