I have a 1983...

I have a 1983 yanmar 1700 17 hp tractor with a 2TR17 motor that it want start unless you have starting fluid then when it cranks white smoke and coolant comes out the exhaust ! Why ? I just changed the head gasket could be a defected head gasket or do I need new rings ?

Mechanic's Assistant: When did the damage occur? Are you planning on fixing the head gasket yourself?

Before I changed the head gasket it was running hot after a few minutes but started fine !

No ! Just when I get it started with starter fluid it will run with lots of white smoke coming out and black liquid coming out exhaust it’s not oil it’s not sticky I believe it coolant but if I wave a must if starter fluid at the top of valve cover it stays running

Any coolant out the exhaust will be head or head gasket, as for the hard to start, does it have glow plugs, and are they working?

I'm not sure if it has glow plugsI just replaced the head gasket I bought off eBay do you think it just a defected head gasket

I spray a little starter fluid and it will crank but I have to maintain a small mist to keep it running but lots of white smoke and black liquid comes from exhaust

Glow plugs would look like spark plugs, next to the injectors in the head. One for each cylinder.

All Yanmars I have seen have glow plugs. I see no video. So even after either, it will not stay running? Rings may be ruined from overheat and does not have enough compression.

Was it running after the overheat? Was the head ok, was it checked for cracks.

Yup as long as it just running it runs a little with out starter fluid but if I put a load like my 3 point hitch it diesI did not check for cracks in head ! Yes it ran after over heating I just changed head gasket and reset valves to spec

Have you run cylinder test? Loosen one injector line at a time, to see if one cylinder is not working??

No problem have not don't that method of textingTestingIf the head is bad will it produce white smoke and coolant out exhaust ? Their is no water in oilI put k seal head gasket to the system as well

With it idling, loosen one of the high pressure lines at a time, engine should die back, if cylinder id bad, no difference will occur and the smoke may stop, indicating that cylinder is probelm, maybe bad injector or valves need adjustment.

Yes, valves need proper adjustment. Have to have clearnce. .25 to .35 MM. intake and exhaust. .010 to .012 inch.
