Seal kit and some bearings are available, but the steering controller, should not be subject to play. Have you checked the connection between the steering wheel and the controller? If the controller has play, I would not advise trying to repair it, but get you a new one!  Way too complicated for the average FIY selfer. Now if it has old-style gearbox, it can be repaired.

I am sure if I use the after market steering controler, I am going to have to do line modifications. Do you have any suggestions on hooking up the line ports?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

Mark the existing hoses and where they go, the new controller should be marked. Usually will be the same as the old.

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
If not in the same place how do I make the lines reach the ports?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

f you have to, you can make extensions, or remake at the lines. But from what I see, the replacement should fit in the same place, and no changes would be needed.  Did you ever figure out where the play was?

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Play is in the steering controler.
Everything else seems tight.

How do you change the fan belt at the fan shaft?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

Pump drive shaft or the pump has to be slipped back, so the belt will slip in. The shaft coming off the Crankshaft pulley will be LH thread!

9/16 oring, take one and match it up at auto supply. and get a higher durometer rating than a standard boring. duromeer is the hardness of the boring.

I am going to change the engine, hydraulic fluid and fluids. Plus the fuel filter. I have no idea when they were changed last. Do you have any suggestions?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

Just bleed the fuel filters after installation, up to the injection pump before trying to start. You want to get all the air out, otherwise, you will have a problem starting.

Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Thanks. I plan to crack te
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

OK< you will need to use the primer pump to get the air out.

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Crack the fuel bleed lines before changing the filter to make sure they open. Also I read that the brakes have a plug that you need to check that it has fluid. Where does the brake get the fluid from? How does it get serviced?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

From what I see , the 30B has mechanical brakes and would have no reservoir. Would not require service.

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Where is the fluid coming from leaking out of the right brake actuator assembly seal cover? The boot is torn and has to be replaced.
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Does the transmission have a filter? I have a shift lever for 1,2 & 3 gear. A lever for Hi & Low. A lever for forward and reverse. I think I have a standard 6-speed transmission.
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

The axle has fluid in it, and that is what is leaking out. The seal is installed over the brake rod, the linkage is removed, the old seal is removed, a new seal is installed over the brake rod and tapped into the housing.  The mechanical transmission will only have a screen where the pump sucks from the transmission. No filter.

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
I drained the transmission fluid. Should it be tan? I bought National Farm Tractor Fluid to put in the transmission and hydraulics. It does not look tan.
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

Oil should not be tan, water, or other contamination. Fluid when new should be almost clear.

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
What do you use to tap it into the housing?
Do I need to flush out the old tan fluid?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

To install the new seal, use a hammer and punch, to get it into position. I would not flush the oil, better to run it for 50 hours, and change it again.

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Destroy the seal trying to get it in. I got it seated on the shaft grove. Could not seat it in the hole. Have to get a new one.
Also I can not get the engine oil plug to stop seeping oil. I replaced the copper seal with another copper seal still seeps oil.
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

Did you get all the old seals outer housing out? New seal should not be hard to install! As for the oil plug, pan can have hairline crack or seal surface may be damaged.??

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
I got all the old seal out but the metal surface is rough. Might need to use sandpaper to smooth it out a bit.
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

Finely got the new boot installed in the right side. Now I am having difficulty removing the large pin for the left side. Both boots were deterioated. I used WD40 and a C clamp for the right. The left is being difficult. Any suggestions?

Heat? Propane torch?

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question

Tried that. I am going to buy a bigger C clamp and more heat. I am also changing all the filters and fluids. I can not find a gasket for the hydraulic filter that goes into the right side frame. I am going to try to make one. What material gasket material should I use?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

Best is a thin cork material if you can fin it. otherwise use a thick paper gasket material.

I did get the filter changed. I would like to replace the small hydraulic suction rubber tubing. I looks like it was once replaced with car water hose. What the system pressure? It is only secured with 2 simple worm gear clamps. Can I replace it with the same hose or do I need to replace it with an expensive hydraulic reinforced hose?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

No pressure, it should be suction, and you just don't want a hose that will collapse.

Not knowing much about universal hydraulic fluid, to be safe, I went to a Massey Ferguson dealer. I told him I have a MF30B. He sold me universal hydraulic. Since I did not purchase enough I started looking for more with the same specifications. Did research. I found out there is two kinds J20C and J20D and they should not be mixed. I live in Michigan. What should I be using?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

Use the C for the Massey. The viscoity is the only difference, and I doubt it will make any difference. D is used in hydrostats.

Ask Your Own Agriculture and Farm Equipment Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Why would he sell me D? I already put in J20D in the tranmission and the bucket hydraulics. The old fluid was contaminated. It was milky. When I replace it, I will replace it with C. How many hours whould I wait?
Mechanic: Curtis B., Technician replied 1 year ago

I would run it for at least 10 hours, before changing it. The D will not hurt it.

The transmission cover for the clutch controls was missing. I fabricated a cover. Looking in the hole it looks like it was off for some time. I dug and scraped out a lot of grease oil dirt. Should I try flushing the area with degreaser or just cover it up with the cover?
