i have a jd 2240 that has an oily fim in the radiator and i have been adding coolant regularly

Oil in the radiator is sign of the engine oil cooler leaking. The oil pressure is much higher than the water pressure, so it goes into the cooling system. See oil cooler in the link below. You see no evidence of coolant in the oil? SHows up at th e oil filler cap, or the inside of the dipstick tube.
