Customer Question

My Ford 2000 diesel tractor"s pto stopped turning. I was bush hogging and noticed it wasn't cutting anything. The pto wasn't turning. This happended before and I turned the tractor off and took a look underneath the bush hog, didn't find anything, and when I started it up again, it resumed turning. I continued to use it for several hours. The next time I went to use it, no problem. The third time, The tractor was only running 5 minutes when the pto shut down. What is wrong? and what can I do about it? I had the clutch replaced last year, and I have all of 20 hours which most of which was moving round hay bales.

From everything I see, the pto is a mechanical pto! So you have shaft from the transmisiion clutch that goes back and mates the pto shaft with a mechanical connection, that you shift in and out.

You say clutch is new, does the clutch pedal have freeplay? Do you have any gear grinding when you engage the pto?

I'm thinking you have pto shaft or the coupler, that is moving and letting the spline drop out. A bad bearing on the pto shaft? Does the output shaft have a lot of endplay?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I don't think so. I can turn the pto and the shaft that's connected to the bush hog by hand. So nothing is bound up. I'm befuddled as to why it "fixed" itself on the prior occasion.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

That's why I think the shaft is moving out of the coupler!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I am not mechanical. I had some advise about there being a hydraulic oil fill that may be low...is that bs because no one ever showed me that. I check the engine oil every use.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
What do I do to correct it?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Only oil check is the transmission , and it is on the transmission shift cover. Check the pto output shaft and see if you can more than 1/4 of end play. Any thing more would indicate it has problems, bad bearing or snap ring off.
