I have a john deere 2002 lx288, I put a new battery in it the battery light stays on I am not sure if it is charging the battery the new battery went dead the other day after I mowed the grass I went to started it it would not start I put the battery on charge it has been fine the battery light still stays on all the time.

Do you have a voltmeter to test the charging system? The stator/alternator is under the flywheel, and comes out to the voltage regulator/rectifier. Which is the output that has to charge the battery. Usually the regulator is the problem, but it can be the stator! Do you have the Briggs engine or the Kawasaki?

I have a briggs engine . I do not have a voltmeter.
