The typical Deere control valve for loader, has the return springs in the lower caps. This is where the water collects and rusts the springs and spring seats and the detents.

You need to remove the covers, and clean the parts, and use some light grease on the springs and parts.

The water was acting as lubricant, so when you drained it, it got worse!

Your best choice is to remove it as assembly, then disassemble on the bench, or then take it to dealer.

also got some advise to force antifreeze into the cables...comment?

This valve is used with more than one application, you're saying that this is a cable operated valve? If so, you might need new cable. If water has entered the housing, you will not be able to free them up.

Remove the cable from the valve spool and see if the cable is tight, or the spool is tight.
koboma :
If its just the cable, bite the bullet and buy new cables. They are not serviceable and should be sealed, yours are no longer sealed if they had water in them!

I was thinking of a lever operated valve, my fault for not asking more questions!

long cable runs from joystick, under cab to valve body on rear of tractor. Michigan (cold weather) friend uses the antifreeze method of forcing it into the cable jacket.
koboma :
You could try getting some oil into the housing, but there is no provision to grease the cable. They come sealed and getting antifreeze or oil then them is usually not an option. No way to pressure up the fluid to get it in the inner portion. Try it, you don't have anything to lose.!
