Customer: I have a 2002 JD GX345 garden tractor and yesterday I was blowing up leaves and I lost the hydraulics. Fairly loud high pitched whine was coming from tranny. Won't move, no power steering and deck won't lift. I removed seat and fender/deck and the drive belt runs and so does the fan. I talked to my local JD dealer and he suggested new tranny filter and inline hydraulic filter. So I drained the tranny (both plugs) and replaced both filters and filled her up with JD transmission/hydraulic oil. Still no hydraulics...... Dealer said that if that doesn't work, bring it in as it's probably the pump in the transmission.
Is there anything else that I can do to fix the problem? Dealer says 7 - 10 days to look at it. I rebuilt the carb and replaced the fuel pump, filter and all fuel lines this summer so feel pretty confident in mid level repairs....

Hi my name is XXXXX XXXXX I may be able to help you out. It sounds like it probably is the hydraulic pump, but here are a few things to check just to be sure. First if you have the old filter still cut it open and see if there is any metal contamination in it, or did you possibly notice any metal on the drain plugs or in the oil, if you stir the old oil and look at in the sunlight you may see a metallic swirl like fine glitter. Next you could take the inline hydraulic filter off and start the unit quickly and see if oil pumps out. Are the hydraulics completely dead or do they try to work but are too weak to do anything?

Hydraulics don't work at all.
It's possible that the relief valve is stuck open, and that is what caused the hydraulics to stop completely, unfortunately the relief valve gets stuck open from contamination from the failing hydraulic pump. I would suggest trying the things that I suggested and go from there. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do. Thanks,

Found out the splines on pulley on top of transmission were stripped. Drive belt turned, pulley turned but didn't turn the shaft that goes into transmission and runs the hydro pump.
$38 pulley, also replaced the main drive belt ($67) while I was at it.
Runs like a top.
